Curd is a jargon of good living bacteria that helps to boost your health, whether it is digestion or anything else. Curd is a natural replacement of artificial probiotics. But, quite often people suffer with digestive issues after having curd. Since, curd consists of 'lactobacillus', which is a living bacteria. Hence, utmost care has to be taken while consuming it to reap its benefits without becoming a "curd victim". Therefore, stick with me and know the correct way of eating curd.
Ayurveda, teaches the right way and time to consume curd. But, most often people end up eating it in a completely detrimental way, just for the sake of taste. So, here we head to enlighten ourselves about the wrong methods that we have been using till now and along with that the best ways to fix them so as to receive it's vital benefits.
(1). Curd should never be consumed with table salt or table sugar.
Hey! Don't get stressed. Actually, curd can be eaten in both the ways i.e., as sweet and as savoury. Let me elaborate meticulously. Refined sugar and salts are treated with chemicals, which hinders with the nutritional and probiotical information of curd. Further, after addition of them it leaves curd good for nothing.
• What's the remedy then?
Well, you just have to replace,
Table sugar with--------> jaggery or
mishri powder
Table salt with--------> black or rock salt
After this, the vital properties of curd remain intact.
• Which one is better ?
Both modified versions of curd are good but
(a). if you are a person who's suffering from acidity, bleeding, body heat, and hair fall, then you must prefer sweeter one and,
(b). if you are dealing with gas, body pains, indigestion, savoury should be preferred.
(2). Curd should never be eaten at night.
As per Maharishi Vagabhata in Ayurveda, curd should never be consumed at night. He says, when sun goes down, our body's temperature also goes down along with it, mucus also increases in night times. Since, curd is mucus-causing, thus, if curd is consumed at night can cause severe complications further.
• Way ahead : but still, if you want to have something like it , I advice you to prefer Buttermilk with a pinch of Black pepper or roasted cumin powder and rock salt.
(3). Some wrong combinations of curd.
At the top of the list comes everybody's favourite 'cucumber raita' and 'boondi raita'. Actually, the nature of cucumber and curd is completely different ( virrudha aahaar) and combining them anyway will prove to be detrimental for your body system.
Similarly, boondi is deep fried hence not at all compatible with curd either and it can also make you put on some fat.
• Way ahead : What so ever happen, how can we give up eating our favourite raitas entirely !
There's so another solution for that. You can replace cucumber with Bottle Gourd. It tastes similar to cucumber raita and is an awesome healthy food choice.
(4). Curd and milk should never be mixed together.
Mouth watering smoothies and many delicious dishes are prepared by mixing curd and milk together. But, when this combo is consumed it acts as a toxic substance in our bodies which further results in several health related issues. So, do never ever mix them !
Some more food combinations which are perilous to your health are : curd & fish/ brinjal/ sour fruits/ banana/ eggs, etc.
(5). Curd in Arthritis and skin problems.
Curd should be a no no... if you have skin problems or if you are suffering from Arthritis.
• Way ahead : for consuming curd in skin problems, eat only fresh curd and that so after blending it with a spoon which decreases it's hot potency.
For people who are suffering from Arthritis, he/she can do eat curd by adding a pinch of dry ginger powder to it.
(6). Heating the curd.
Curd contains millions of beneficial living bacteria. Heating would kill them moreover, heated curd is even more hot in potency and it also becomes difficult to digest and it may cause skin problems, acidity and other biological disorders which are caused by "pitta-dosha".
Further, curd when heated looses it's nutritional value, produces toxins in the food and summons a lot many diseases.
In addition to it, while heating curd, the chemical bonds are broken in such a way that in severe cases can even cause allergies to the person who consumes it.
Yes! You have read it correct. Curd is a natural Probiotic. Instead of having artificial probiotics which are not that beneficial and are loaded with sugar which can eventually lead to putting on fat, curd should be used. Just, take 1 bowl of curd empty stomached, 3-4 times a week and you are all set.
(7). Curd as a Probiotic.
(8). Curd as a Probiotic.
See, curd should not be seen as a seasonal food rather than an all time food. The best time to have curd is Winter Season and the worst is Rainy Season. In rainy season, all three doshas ,i.e., vata, pitta & kapha doshas are at peak and our digestive fire is the weakest, moreover, a lot of moisture is present in the atmosphere. And eating curd in rainy season may cause problems such as allergies due to formation of toxins in out bodies.
